Protecting Ohio’s Children- Together We Can Prevent Child Abuse & Neglect

- Annual Child Abuse & Neglect & Prevention Conference

History:

Based on the success of the 2001 Intentional Head Injury Conference, Prevent Child Abuse Ohio & Children’s Hospital approached key organizations in Ohio to collaborate on offering an annual child abuse awareness and prevention conference – “Protecting Ohio’s Children.” Taking place at the end of each April – Child Abuse Prevention Month, the goal is to recognize the efforts of those in the prevention and advocacy fields, while continuing to strengthen the need for networking and collaboration, support those within the prevention field, and educate advocates for change.

The 2003 conference was a huge success with over 225 participants, and 8 exhibitors in attendance at the Fawcett Center in Columbus, Ohio. The 2004 conference continued to show the community's desire for education and collaboration with 251 participants and 10 exhibitors in attendance.

The 2005 conference showcased keynote speakers Jerry Tello, Director of the National Latino Fatherhood and Family Institute in East Los Angeles, CA and Kevin Kirkpatrick, Vice President, Communications and Advancement, of Prevent Child Abuse America.

Joint sponsors of this year's conference included: Children's Hospital, Columbus Ohio, Children's Institute for Pediatric Education and The Ohio Children's Trust Fund. Community Partners included The Ohio Network of Children's Advocacy Centers and Public Children Services Association of Ohio with the support of OhioHealth and The Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence.

The 2006 conference showcased keynote speaker Naomi Haines Griffith, President of Red Clay and Vinegar.  Conference co-sponsors include Ohio Children's Trust Fund, Children's Hospital Education Institute with community partners Public Children Services Association of Ohio and the Ohio Network Of Children's Advocacy Centers.

The 2007 conference showcased keynote speaker Victor Rivas Rivers at The Conference Center at NorthPointe. In 1999, Victor Rivers became a leading ACTIVIST in the cause of preventing violence against women and children. As the national spokesperson for the National Network to End Domestic Violence, he uses his own harrowing story of surviving a home where abuse took place on the level of torture to raise awareness about what he considers our greatest yet most curable social disease. Victor Rivas Rivers has now become an AUTHOR, with the publication of his memoir, A PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER.  The 2007 conference was co-sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse Ohio, The Ohio Children's Trust Fund, The Ohio Domestic Violence Network, Columbus Children's Hospital and the Columbus Children's Hospital Education Institute.  Community partners for the conference included Public Children Services Association of Ohio and the Ohio Network of Children's Advocacy Centers.

This 2008 conference featured innovative workshops focusing on childhood health issues and the interconnectedness to child maltreatment. The keynote for the 2008 conference was Dr. Sharon Cooper MD, FAAP. She holds a faculty position at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and is the CEO of Developmental & Forensic Pediatrics, a consulting firm that provides medical care, training, and expert witness experience in child maltreatment cases, as well as medical care for children with disabilities. Topics that were addressed at the conference included Health Outcomes of Child Abuse and Neglect, Shaken Baby Syndrome Education and Prevention, Childhood Obesity and its Linkage to Child Maltreatment, Oral Hygiene – The Role of Dentistry and Child Maltreatment.

Co-sponsors of the 2008 conference included Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund. Platinum partners for the event included Public Children Services Association of Ohio and Molina Healthcare.
