Pinwheels For Prevention: Close to Home
"Through the Pinwheels For Prevention campaign, we were able to communicate the need for prevention efforts, as well as the important message that as a community and as individuals, we all have a part to play in eliminating child abuse. Through the Pinwheels For Prevention campaign, we were able to rally organizations and individuals to be diligent in their efforts to rid child abuse in our community until it is but a sad and distant memory, and the only pinwheels we see are in the hands of happy children."
Richard Evens, President
Mercy Children's Hospital (Toledo) |
 |
"More than four hundred seventy pinwheels planted on Children Services' lawn for the month of April has made more awareness impact in our community than any other program we have ever offered. Community members who have never given child abuse a thought have paused, shaking their heads, and commented, 'That is far too many cases for our small county.'"
Kim Reynolds
Guernsey County Children Services |
|
"We reached the helpers from the agencies, everyone who came to the events, those who read the paper or saw the news and those who by word of mouth heard that child abuse does happen and it can be stopped. And most importantly we always added at all places and in all written material that any adult can make a difference and be the voice for a child."
Laurie L. McGuire
Children's Advocacy Center of Portage County

"We are deeply gratified by the response we have been getting to the Pinwheels For Prevention campaign. The pinwheels, which were displayed throughout the community, have evoked a heartwarming reaction from a wide variety of people who all share a common concern about the children of our community, from the Franklin County Commissioners....to reporters who said they saw pinwheels everywhere...to our client families and children...the pinwheels truly made an impact."
John Saros
Franklin County Children Services
|
 |
"The choir director (who helped with campaign's kick-off) said he really didn't expect the responses he got from the children when it was explained to them that each pinwheel represented a report of suspected abuse called in for a child. He didn't realize how much they understood until he noticed their disappointment at not being able to participate. They said they wanted to help the children too and wanted to stay and plant a pinwheel. The director was given a pinwheel for each child in the choir to plant back at school so the students could 'help' those children out too."
Donna Dickman
Partnership For Violence Free Families
(Allen County) |
|
| "Throughout the weekend events, the continual whirl of the moving pinwheels created a powerful audio and visual representation of the number of reported cases of child abuse and neglect in 2003. Following the display, Blue Ribbon For Kids Committee displayed and distributed pinwheels to children and their families as well as other child-serving agencies and organizations."
Denise Uhl Jenkins
CARE House (Montgomery County) |
 |
"'Pinwheels' gave us new energy and a wonderful opportunity to provide a very visual child abuse prevention campaign. The one-child, one pinwheel analogy really raised awareness for our county and we received many positive comments."
Lisa Rutter
Knox County DJFS |
 |
"In Ross County, we were thrilled to be one of the 13 counties to participate in the Pinwheels For Prevention campaign. There was a lot of enthusiasm for the first year of this project that translated into the postitive feedback we got from the community after we displayed the pinwheels in the park."
Coletta Danneker
Child Protection Center of Ross County
