Pinwheels For Prevention

The sections for the Pinwheels For Prevention Campaign are:

Overview

Pinwheels For Prevention, Prevent Child Abuse Ohio’s statewide public awareness campaign, is designed to bring attention to child abuse and neglect in communities throughout Ohio.

The successful campaign was invented by Prevent Child Abuse Georgia, one of Prevent Child Abuse Ohio's sister chapters, and it has been underway throughout the state of Georgia for a number of years. Prevent Child Abuse Ohio has signed a licensing agreement with Prevent Child Abuse Georgia, the first PCA America chapter to do so, to implement the campaign for April - Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

In April, in communities throughout the state of Ohio, colorful children’s pinwheels will be planted in front of courthouses, playgrounds, libraries and parks.  Each pinwheel will represent a case of child abuse and neglect reported to the public children service agencies in Ohio.  In addition, education and media campaigns will complement these displays to raise the public's awareness on child abuse and neglect.

In 2003, there were 95,665 reports of child abuse and neglect in the state of Ohio.  Most Ohioans are unaware of how widespread the problems of child abuse and neglect are in their local community.

Pinwheels for Prevention is designed to show the public in a very dramatic way that child abuse and neglect happen in every community and encourage them to focus on prevention as part of an overall plan to break the cycle of abuse.

2008 Pinwheels For Prevention Campaign

Prevent Child Abuse Ohio is proud to announce that the goal for the 4th Annual Pinwheels For Prevention Campaign is "88 in 08."

April's activities were kicked off by Prevent Child Abuse Ohio by the planting of the 6,954 pinwheels representing the Franklin County Display on Sunday, March 30, 2008.  These pinwheels were planted by community volunteers including individuals from the Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), Lifestyle Communities, Prevent Child Abuse Ohio, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Village Network, Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio (SARNCO), Ohio Children's Trust Fund and local Girl Scout Troops.
